There is a close bond between Christmas Markets and the local gastronomic offer.
The majority of the markets is located in the Alps, whereas others are situated in various regions of Italy. Therefore, the gastronomy varies according to the typical local products.
In the south of Italy, especially in Naples, one can find rich and tasty sweets and cakes, whereas the mountain resorts like Brixen, Bruneck or Bolzano, offer chocolate cakes with spices, strudel, dry biscuits, chocolate fruit and all sorts of delicacies: sausages, wines, grappa, tisanes, syrups.
In the mountain areas it can be very cold in winter, so many of the open air tables are provided with stoves, where people can stop by and eat in the comfort of a heated environment.
Vin brulé and liquors are also helpful against the cold. Food stands sell sandwiches with würstel, onions or cabbages, mayonnaise and, why not, beer.
In places like Paris, Frankfurt, Innsbruck or Salzburg, you may try sandwiches with würstel and cabbages, melt chiese and sausages, or the exquisite local cakes.
In Italy, places like Bolzano, Levico e Torino offer special Christmas menus for the entire duration of the markets. In Trento a real gastronomic tour is arranged around the stands.
