Events

The fair of Santa Lucia is a very old tradition for the city. Until the descent of the Napoleonic troops the fair used to take place opposite the church dedicated to the saint. After 1796 the market was moved under the porch of Santa Maria dei Servi, where it is still held. For about two centuries the exhibition was left to the private initiatives of the tradesmen, while at the beginning of the ‘90s, the event was enriched with more and more activities. Both the fair of Santa Lucia and the Christmas Market offer a wide choice of gastronomy delicacies, above all the torrone, and the possibility to buy some crib clay figurines.

Bologna cribs
Not everybody knows that the city of bologna can boast a tradition of cribs as old as the one of Naples. The characters of the crib are molded or carved in materials such as terracotta, wood, papier mache or plaster, with no use of stuff to complete their dresses. Two characters are particularly representative of the Bolognese crib: the Wonder, a female character, caught in awe in front of Jesus’ birth, and her opposite character, the Sleeper, a male statue represented in the act of sleeping, regardless of the Event.

In 1991 the Association of the Fair Exhibitors decided to embellish the fair of Santa Lucia with works by Gino Pellegrino, a Bolognese scene-painter who collaborated for 25 years with the major US film production companies such as Warner Bross, Disney and Paramount Pictures. For the fair of Santa Lucia, he made some wooden panels in real size, representing the Nativity Scene. The works take inspiration from artists the likes of Giotto, Simone Martini, Beato Angelico, Pier della Francesca, Lorenzo Monaco, Simone Martini.
